A PENARTH teenager with a passion for classical music is set to star in a children's opera this weekend.

Niamh Bannister, 13, will play the role of Sophie in a production of Benjamin Britten's 'The Little Sweep' at St Teilos Church on Friday and Saturday.

Pocket Opera, Cardiff's newest community based opera company, has recruited a cast of local children, emerging professional opera singers and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama students to perform in the production, which will also feature audience participation.

Niamh, who lives in Penarth, said it was "awesome" being part of the production as she loves classical music and opera.

She is currently studying for her grade five singing exams, and is also part of the Welsh National Opera's children's chorus and in the National Children's Choir of Great Britain.

Niamh, who enjoys drama, art, and dance, also plays the viola and is hoping to complete grade six in the summer.

The Little Sweep opera takes place from 7.30pm at St Teilos Church on Woodville Road on Friday, February 27, and Saturday, February 28.

Tickets are £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and £3 for RWCMD students.

Tickets are available on the door or by calling the RWCMD box office on 02920 391391.
