A JEWELLERY shop in Penarth was broken into on the night of Monday, May 18.

Rowley's the Jewellers saw an intruder smash their way into the shop, targeting a display cabinet full of dress rings.

The shop's alarm disturbed the intruder before they could do any more damage to the Victorian cabinets.

Local businesses rang the owners and passers-by were able to give statements to the police.

Proprietor Petra Aydin Barberini said: "We are just glad nobody was hurt.

"I had been working late that night and both my husband Cem and our son had checked by the shop minutes before the burglary, so I'm glad none of us were on the premises at the time.

"It's a mess and we've had a very sleepless night. However when you see tragedies around the world in the news every day, it reminds you to keep things in perspective.

"We will do our best to have the business up and running normally as quickly as possible."

Cem and Petra want to thank friends who rallied around to give support. They also send a big thank you to the local police who responded so quickly and kept watch as the building had emergency repairs.
