LEARN the secrets of a Penarth SuperHome when it opens its doors to the public on Saturday September 10.

The award-winning home in Clive Place was bought by Nigel and Chris Humphrey, and visitors are invited to take a tour around the property to discover the ways the pair improved the building, referred to as a SuperHome.

Purchased as a neglected and rundown space, the duo transformed it into an attractive, comfortable and inexpensive home.

An architectural consultant, Nigel designed the changes himself, modelling the build on the computer so as to choose the most cost-effective measures.

Two years after completion, the pair said they are "very happy" with the result.

The total energy cost for the house about £500 a year, it’s never cold, they get £250 a year back from the Government Feed-in Tariff scheme, and £1,000 a year from the Renewable Heat Incentive. The CO2 savings are over 82 per cent.

They will open their doors as part of an event co-ordinated by the National Energy Foundation, supported by Green Open Homes.

SuperHomes have been selected as the UK homes most improved for energy use, making them fit for the future.

Most have superior insulation; many have alternative heating sources and some produce their own energy.

Entry is free.
