AN ARCHITECTURAL firm from Penarth has seen one of its projects named as one of the top six in the UK.

Loyn & Co's Outhouse scheme has been shortlisted by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for their prestigious Stirling Prize.

Outhouse, which is located near Offa's Dyke in Gloucestershire, is the first private house to feature on the shortlist for 15 years.

The concrete house was designed for an artist couple and features spectacular views.

Loyn & Co has won the Eisteddfod Gold Medal for architecture twice. It has also won the RIBA Manser Medal in the past.

Firm director Chris Loyn lives in Penarth and has previously appeared on the television programme Grand Designs.

He also finds time for charity work and is a founder and regular fundraiser for Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales.

Mr Loyn said he was "elated" and "shocked" when he got the call from RIBA.

"It's thrilling, not just from a personal point of view but from a Welsh perspective," he said.

"Sometimes our expectations are too low but we often punch above our weight.

"There is plenty of architectural talent out there and this shows that we do have the quality."

Speaking about the house itself, Mr Loyn said: "It has a special feel to it. It is one of those houses you have to visit to appreciate."

Robert Firth, president of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, said it was a "well-deserved" recognition of outstanding design.

“Judging panels and clients sometimes have a tendency to overlook Welsh talent, so I welcome this spotlight on Welsh design creativity," he added.

"Loyn & Co is one of many talented practices working in Wales today, on projects of all sizes and budgets."

John Pardey, a multi-award-winning English architect, said: "Loyn & Co have created one of the most outstanding new houses in Britain in a decade."

Loyn & Co will now go head-to-head with the five other practices shortlisted for architecture’s highest accolade, which is in its 21st year.

It will be awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects on October 6.
