ORGANISERS of a scheme to encourage more people to use their local shops are aiming to get more people involved with the scheme.

The Shop in Penarth (SiP) scheme was launched in 2009 by community group Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG).

The aim of the scheme was to promote local shopping, support the local economy and promote a greener way of living.

It has offered a loyalty card scheme offering discounts and special offers, and the chance to win vouchers.

Tricia Griffiths is one of those who helped set up the scheme and says that there has been a drop in volunteers and wants to encourage more people to get involved to keep it going

She aims to use social media to increase its reach as she realises the importance of the scheme having an online presence.

"We started with eight or nine volunteers and now we have two.

"At one point we had 60 retailers involved in the scheme and there were around 4000 cards issued.

"We are determined to get SiP going again on a simpler basis working with key partners as we think it is good to work together."

Discussions will take place over the coming weeks to consider how to proceed with the scheme.

Penarth Town Council has confirmed it wants to see the scheme to continue and is willing to help by providing an online platform to promote it.

*Our Your High Street: Use It or Lose It has already featured businesses, shoppers and politicians on the importance of our town's high streets.

We are always keen to hear from others with ideas on how to promote and improve them.
