FROM the Archives continues looking back at old photographs from the history of Penarth focusing on the family-run grocery and provision merchants A T Timms.

It was opened in the late summer of 1955 by Albert (known as Bert) and Dora Timms and their daughters Janet, Margaret and Alison joined them behind the counter after leaving school at 15.

The shop was located at number 10 Glebe Street near Chris Capus’ as well as D&G Simmonds and Williams Bakery.

Mr Timms was popular and loved being behind the counter but Mrs Timms preferred being behind the scenes as the book keeper

The shop became known as The Bacon Shop and stopped selling groceries in the 1960s.

Mr Timms died in 1972 and the business was sold in 1974. Thanks to Jan Butler who submitted the photographs via the Images of Bygone Penarth on Facebook.
