A SCHEME to encourage more people to use locally-owned shops in Penarth will be relaunched next month.

The revamped Shop Penarth scheme will be unveiled at the Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) food festival on September 17.

The scheme was launched in 2010 as Shop in Penarth (SiP), with the aim of promoting local shopping, supporting the area’s economy and encouraging a greener way of living.

The scheme offers a loyalty card through which shoppers can get special offers as well as the chance to win vouchers.

It will soon have a web page providing more information.

Tricia Griffiths, one of the founder members, said she is very hopeful that the new Shop Penarth scheme will have wide appeal among retailers and shoppers.

“I am delighted to be part of the team which is working hard to get the new scheme launched in September,” she said.

“It is a very exciting to see Shop Penarth moving forward.

“It will look fresh and modern, but will retain it’s original aim of supporting the local economy and building a sustainable future for Penarth.”

Penarth shops Hamptons and Shore, Anthony Slaughter from GPG, Karen Dunlop of the Umpa Lumpa Sweet Shop and the town council are involved with the scheme.

Peter Knowles of Hamptons said he was “thrilled” the scheme was being re-launched.

“The principal aim of the scheme is to encourage people to support local shops and in return independent retailers will offer incentives to people who have got a Shop Penarth card,” he said.

“We have supported the scheme since it launched and have had offers in our shop and cafe.”
