GIRLGUIDING Penarth is taking part in local charity Ty Hafan's 'Snowdogs: Tails in Wales' campaign, designing two of their own 'Snowpups' to add to the public art trail set to take over the streets of Cardiff this Autumn.

The Snowdogs campaign, raises money for terminally unwell children across Wales, sees the Snowdogs and Snowpups scultures on display for 10 weeks alongside iconic buildings and open spaces throughout Cardiff. There will be 40 Snowdogs in total, supplemented by 55 Snowpups sponsored by local schools, adult learners and community groups.

Girlguiding Penarth has two Snowpups, which will be displayed in Cardiff Central Library.

Megan Edwards, of Penarth District Senior Section and Sophie Wilford, an eight-year-old brownie from Ninth Penarth Brownies, both won a competition to design the Snowpups from over 300 entries.

Megan’s Snowpup, ‘Olave’, named after the founder of Girlguiding Lady Olave Baden-Powell, was painted by members of 94th Penarth Guides and Penarth District Senior Section.

Sophie’s pup, 'Chocolate', was painted by guide leader Joy Whinney.

Asked why she entered the competition, Sophie said: "I thought it would be fun. I love doing art and all things Brownies.

"My design was inspired by my love of doing Brownie badges. Chocolate is wearing a Brownies uniform and she is wearing a collar with the Brownie badge.

"I called it Chocolate because we are Brownies, and I love chocolate brownies nearly as much as I love Brownies."

The trail launches on September 16 and runs until November 26, before the Snowdogs are auctioned to raise funds for Ty Hafan in early December. The Snowpups will then be returned to Girlguiding Penarth.
