THE Vale council has agreed to remove an air quality management area status for a major Penarth road.

A report which will be presented to cabinet today (Monday, October 9) will suggest removing the AQMA status for Windsor Road because the area has complied with air quality targets for at least three years.

The Local Air Quality Management Annual Progress Report (LAQR) confirms that air quality in Windsor Road meets air quality objectives.

The results of the monitoring on Windsor Road indicate that the annual average particulate matter (PM10) concentration at the Windsor Road monitoring station is compliant with the target of 40 micrograms per cubic metre.

This is currently the only location in the Vale where particulate matter is actively monitored.

There were no monitoring sites in the Vale with nitrogen dioxide concentrations above 60 micrograms per cubic metre in 2016 which the report states makes it unlikely that the hourly nitrogen dioxide objective will be exceeded at any location in the Vale.

Welsh Government guidance says that where compliance in an AQMA occurs over a period of three years or more, then the council should consider revoking the status.

The final decision to revoke it will be taken by Welsh Government following a review and consultation with the local communities affected.

Any future developments in the area will be fully assessed by Shared Regulatory Services to ensure there is no detrimental impact on the air quality of the area.
