TWO teenagers from Dinas Powys raised £600 through a charity fundraising day at their tennis club in aid of Diabetes UK Cymru.

Junior tennis captain Libby Smith, 17, and fellow junior captain Isaac Follon, 15, organised a day of fun at the Dinas Powys Tennis Club, which included touch tennis tournaments, a game of "soak the coach" a barbecue and a raffle.

More than 100 children and parents turned up to the event on September 23.

Diabetes UK Cymru is a charity that is close to Libby’s heart, as her father Andrew was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 14 years ago. Her aunt also lives with the condition.

People with Type 1 diabetes don’t produce the hormone insulin, which moves the glucose from the food into cells.

It is a lifelong condition that requires careful daily management.

The causes are unknown but unlike Type 2 diabetes it has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.

Libby said: “We never expected to raise that much. Everyone was ecstatic and punching the air. I am already thinking about doing a run and a tennis-a-thon in support of Diabetes UK Cymru. This is not the end of my fundraising journey.”

Libby is in the first tennis team at the club, and was last year’s singles, doubles and mixed champion in the adult tournaments. She organised the club’s first junior charity day two years ago and the event was such a success the club invited her back to organise the 2017 event.

Libby’s mum, Sian Smith said: "When Libby puts her heart and soul into something she can achieve amazing things, and the junior charity event was no different. Thanks to her and Isaac, we raised more than £600.

"People were so generous and genuinely interested in the cause. There was a great community spirit throughout the day. It was lovely to see so many people come together to support something so important."

By supporting Diabetes UK Cymru you can help fund vital diabetes research, and provide information and services to help make a difference to their lives.
