A PLAN to install floodlights on the site of a new multi-use games area in north Penarth has been submitted.

The Vale council application to install the lights at the Paget Road open space is part of the authority's North Penarth Open Space Improvement Scheme.

The council has received £600,000 of section 106 money from the Penarth Heights development which is being used to upgrade a number of parks and open spaces in the area.

The others are Dingle open space on Windsor Road, Plassey Square open space and Cogan Recreation Ground.

The three floodlights at the Paget Road improvement scheme will each be six metres high and is intended for use by local families and not for competition sports matches.

The other works to upgrade the open space including the play area, multi-use games area and footpath improvements are not included. They are considered to be permitted development under the Town and Country Order 1995.

The lighting will be controlled via a timer connected to a push button set on a pedestal which will be available for use until 9pm and a warning buzzer will indicate when the lights are about to be turned off.

The timer will prevent lights being switched on after this time.

As well as the multi-use games area, the council's plans for the Paget Road open space include upgrading the play area for juniors aged between four and 12 year old, improving site furniture such as bins, seats and picnic benches, planting additional trees and creating wildflower areas, upgrading the footway through the open space, creating a new viewpoint and introducing low level lighting for younger children to be able to use facilities in the winter months.
