GLAMORGANSHIRE Golf Club members are celebrating the success of their £60,000 investment in a new drainage system for the course.

Based on a blueprint provided by the Sports Turf Research Institute, more than two miles of drainage pipes were laid some nine inches below the surface on what were previously the wettest holes on the course.

The work involved more than 1000 man hours and £200,000 of machinery. In addition, more than 500 metres of paths were constructed by the Club’s own greens staff to improve movement around the course.

Under the supervision of Mike Williams, the club’s experienced head greenkeeper, the work was done by Keith Morgan Mowers and has had a hugely beneficial effect on the playability of the course. Mike Williams said: "In spite of the rainfall in January and February this year being the highest ever recorded, we were able to keep the course open for play for most of that time.

"In one very large step we have gone from being a course with a reputation for being closed too often in the winter months to one that has been open more than any other course in this area."

Jon Morgan of Keith Morgan Mowers added: "I think the Glamorganshire members are to be congratulated on their foresight. Golf is an all year round game now and members expect to be able to play through the winter months.

"Nobody could have predicted the horrendous weather earlier in the year but the new drainage system could not have been more heavily tested. It has definitely paid dividends."

Glamorganshire Golf Club is currently offering a taster golf package for players new to golf and has a limited number of full memberships available.
