A CROQUET team representing Glamorgan has created history by winning the Inter-Counties Championship for the first time.
The county team of Chris Williams (captain), Ian Burridge, John Evans, Garry McElwain, Richard Smith and David Walters produced their best ever performance to win the prestigious trophy - in its 100th year - in Southwick, Sussex.
Glamorgan’s previous highest placing was third in 2012, and Chris Williams said: “Having taken part in the tournament for 20 years, it was great to triumph."
Twenty-two counties take part in the annual tournament in two divisions, with promotion/relegation battles akin to the Football League. Each team of six competes in three doubles games against the 10 other teams in their division. Glamorgan won eight out of their 10 matches - four of them 3-0.
Three of the winning team are members of the Vale of Glamorgan-based Dyffryn Croquet Club, and the other three will be playing at the Welsh Championships at Dyffryn Gardens from June 27-29.
