PENARTH welcomed the fellow Seasiders from Porthcawl to the sunny Athletic Field in their first fixture in history to date. Porthcawl had been recognised as a very successful and organised team so Penarth had to be up to task ahead from the start of the match. Penarth did just that and scored first through a strong running Henry Carter on the left flank to score out wide after some great approach work by the forwards, pinching the ball in the ruck area and slick handling by the backline to release Carter who was playing his first match of the season after injury and scored with his first touch. 5 - 0 Penarth.

The forward exchanges were keen with neither side giving an inch. Porthcawl were looking to release their speedy backs whenever possible and gained some notable overlaps with the Penarth backs scrambling back well.

Josh Lewis was next to benefit after his own chip and chase, gathering and touching down close to the posts, Gruff converted to make the half time score 12 - 0 to Penarth.

Porthcawl came back well in the second half by moving the ball wide whenever possible and benefited through two tries by their right wing from a tap penalty and a well worked handling move, converting one to draw level.

Penarth showed character at all stages of the match but especially the control by Morgan at outside half and using the driving forwards, especially Niall, Ellis, Geraint and Tom Jones. Morgan gathered a loose ball and set off on a huge arcing run down the right touchline to outpace the defence, step the fullback and score under the posts. 17 - 12 Penarth.

All other scores in the match were set up by kicks, two for Penarth through well placed kicks and pressure on the defending team, one by Josh who gathered a bouncing ball well to dive and score and another by Morgan after his own kick bobbled by the defence bounced into his own arms to crash over and one by the Porthcawl number eight and captain who put a timely grubber in to dive to score.

Final score Penarth 31 - Porthcawl 19.

A tremendous win for Penarth showing great character and commitment, who were missing a few key players, with capable players slotting into positions when needed, especially Tomo and Morgan.

Dame of the Game went to Morgan Ashton for his control and two telling scores and dedicated the win to Ceri Griffiths, beating his home town club.

Thanks to Porthcawl for the attitude and composure in the match as well as the support from all Penarth parents and fellow players.
