PENARTH Bowling Club had a very successful week with some excellent performances from the ladies team and victories in the Carruthers Shield and PG Two matches.

The only blemishes over the past seven days were a narrow defeat to Dinas Powys in the Munro Cup and two matches falling victim to the weather.

The ladies had an excellent week with two good wins in the matches played. Sadly, Tuesday’s Double Rink game against Sully Sports fell victim to the weather but captain Sue Croll had plenty to smile about in the other two matches played.

Monday’s Evening League saw Penarth once again lined up against Penarth Windsor, and, yet again the Rectory Road ladies clinched proceedings after another close fought encounter. Betty Jones with Chris Davies, Barbara Brown and Belinda Price won 14-11 and a fighting comeback from Chris Church, Sue Croll, Wendy Grant and and skip Joyce Allen ensured that Rectory Road earned the bragging rights on this occasion.

Things got even better for Thursday’s League match with Millwood, when some excellent bowling saw a clean sweep of wins on all three rinks in a thumping 66-31 victory. Fourteen shot wins for Tricia Brinkworth, accompanied by Lorraine Palmer, Diana Willcocks and Jayne Edwards and Belinda Price’s rink which also featured Norma Duggan, June Williams and Sue Croll were the feature of this game and not far behind was the Betty Jones foursome who won through 22-15.

There was a setback in this year’s Munro Cup campaign when Penarth entertained a strong Dinas Powys side at Rectory Road which included ex-Penarth stars Richard Janes, Dave Parker and Tim Hurcom. On a wet green the visitors showed their mettle and, despite an excellent win for Colin Grant, Dave Clements, Rob Grant and Terry Buckingham (31-11) and skip Dave Dalby with Dave Plank, Derrick Musk and Jack Beanland and a narrow reversal for Clive Fry, it was Richard Janes’ rink which, ironically, sunk Penarth’s hopes with a massive 31-6 win.

This season’s Carruthers Shield campaign ended on a high note with a very good win away at Caerau. On this occasion, it was Clive Fry’s rink who enjoyed the privilege of one of Ron’s increasingly popular “mystery tours” of the valleys and, despite this diversion, they even managed to arrive with three minutes to spare.

Yet again, Colin Grant maintained his good run of form with a 28-16 success helped along by Terry Buckingham, Rob Grant and Dave Clements. Clive Fry’s rink with Phil Davies Ron Birkby and Bob Lewis dug in well to win 22-16 and another sound display from Dave Dalby’s four put the issue beyond doubt. As a result, of this 88-69 success Penarth finished group runners-up.

Meanwhile captain Russel Daniel led his PG Two team to Whitchurch Hospital where Penarth notched up a very worthy victory indeed by 79-64. The complete dominance of Lawrie Brooke’s rink where Berwyn Lansley, Reg Jones and Dave Hilldrup all performed admirably and a winning performance from the ever reliable Roger Gidman, teamed up with Paul Church, Trevor Jenkins and Brian Hocking put the issue beyond doubt, but it should be said that the fighting qualities of the other two rinks, skipped by Bob Hill and Ron Maggs in keeping things tight, were key to this success and underlined the importance of all rinks staying focussed throughout.
