DINAS Powys Golf Club competition season has got off to a great start with some stand out performances from some of the long standing and new members.

The Centenary Cup which was initiated under Simon Berni's captaincy to commemorate 100 years of golf was won by Dave “it's never over till it's over” Hicks (handicap 16) with 40 points.

The long standing member was naturally elated at winning on the day and certainly made sure his playing partners knew about it in the bar after.

Second was John Bridle with 39 points followed by Bob Wilson with 38 points.

The following week, the Colonel Gore Plus and Minus competition was won by Steve Grainger (h,cap 10) with plus four.

Closely behind was early bird player Dave Russ with plus three. Third on count-back was Colin Williams who, with a handicap of seven carded an impressive plus three.

The first pairs trophy of the season was played last Saturday and the winners of the Oscar Powell Cup were L Davies and N Davies with 63.6.

Second were N Clark and G Young with 63.8, followed by D Banner and I Ryley with 64.2.

Mike Perrin was the toast of the club after the competition for his impressive hole in one on the par three ninth. Only the best malt whiskey and port was provided by the legendary night owl for his feat. It was a pity his regular sidekick Phil Rawsthorne was absent from witnessing it.

This weekend the Davila stableford cup will be contested.
