DINAS Powys Cricket Club 1st XI welcomed Whitchurch Heath 1st XI on Saturday, with the visitors determined to win to secure a promotion spot.

Home skipper Lewis Clarke won the toss and chose to field, but it was Heath who made the most of the conditions, despite losing Swain early, as Chris Vanos scored 117 as the visitors racked up 262-5 in their allowed overs.

Some poor fielding from the Dinas 'Villagers' didn't help, meaning Heath got more runs than they should have. Dinas were buoyed by a good wicket and fast outfield which gave them hope at tea.

The in-form Lloyd DiMauro and Matt Todd-Bennett got Dinas off to a good start after tea before the former gave a tame catch with the core at 26.

Joe Beames arrived at the crease, and was just settling when he tried to hook a quick bouncer and collapsed in a heap. The immediate thought was that he'd just lost his balance, but realisation quickly dawned that he'd displaced his knee.

With the player in agony and unable to move an ambulance was immediately summoned, but when it failed to arrive with the player unable to be moved the match was abandoned. In the end, the paramedics did arrive. Once their their expert assist had Beames knee back where it should have been, he was whisked to A&E, where he spent further time and it was confirmed he had damaged ligaments.

Dinas would like to thank Whitchurch Heath for their understanding in the circumstances in which the match was abandoned. The club also sends its best wishes to Joe Beames for a full and fast recovery.

The 2nds travelled to the reverse fixture at Whitchurch Hospital to play Heath 2nds with skipper Andy Ford returning for his first game of the season after an operation. Unfortunately, things didn't quite go to plan as the 'Villagers' managed just 141-8 in their 45, Ford himself top scoring with an unbeaten 30.

In reply, Heath knocked-off the runs in 40 overs with five wickets in hand, Hetherton the pick of the bowlers with 3-31.

The 3rds league match was conceded by the opposition, so hastily arranged friendly against Abercynon was confirmed. Abercynon batted first and were bowled out for 192 with junior AJ Jones having the best figures of 3-13.

In reply, a largely youthful Dinas knocked off the runs with 10 balls and five wickets to spare, veteran Simon Westphal leading the charge with 74, ably supported with a magnificent 44 by young Ryan Mullins.

The youthful theme continued on Sunday when a side containing no less than nine players aged 20 or under visited the Island for a game against Barry West End.

Dinas batted first and scored 174-8 with runs from Rob Mosely (52) and Jack Preston (45).

The young bowlers then backed up the batters restricting West End to 169-6 with wickets for skipper Rhy Lloyd (3-27) and Nathan Waite (2-26). The game was played in excellent spirit and shows vibrancy in the cricket at Dinas Powys.
