A YOUNG boxer from Penarth is completing his final preparations before competing in the Junior Commonwealth Games later this month

Eighteen year old Jay Munn will represent Wales in international competition for the first time in the Bahamas.

He will need to win four consecutive fights in order to become world champion.

The young boxer won the Welsh Youth Title at 75kg and also represented Wales in the three nations championships receiving a bronze which qualified him for this July’s Youth Commonwealth competition.

Jay Munn is a former Cowbridge Comprehensive School pupil, who has been trained in boxing by his uncle Neil Munn in the Penarth Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) since the beginning of his boxing career.

Speaking of the upcoming competition, Jay said: "I cannot wait to represent my country at the Commonwealth Games. "This is my biggest competition to date and I am keen to take on other boxers from around the world.

"I am so grateful to my uncle for the training he has given me over the years in his boxing gym in Penarth.

"He has taught me the importance of skill and discipline amongst many other invaluable things.

"Without a doubt I will be thinking of all that he has taught me when I am in the ring."

Vale MP Alun Cairns visited Jay at the Penarth ABC gym to wish him luck before the trip.

Mr Cairns said: "I met Jay at the very start of his boxing career, and it was clear then that he had a passion for the sport.

"I was astounded to see how much he has matured and improved – he is a very concentrated and driven young man who will undoubtedly go to the top of his sport.

"Good luck Jay, we’re all behind you."
