THERE were mixed fortunes for Penarth's cricketers last weekend but all four teams managed to play.

On Saturday, August 5, the first team played host to Mumbles at the Athletic Ground.

The bears won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first.

Mumbles reached 188-9 from their 50 overs.

In reply, Penarth were bowled out for 141 in the 45th over of their innings, giving the away side a win by 47 runs.

The second team picked up a winning draw as they travelled to Tondu.

Having lost the toss and been asked to bat by the home side, the bears reached 200-9 from their 50 overs.

John Tose led the way with 50 runs as opener James Erasmus contributed a useful 37.

Tondu could only muster 181-9 from their 50 overs, falling 19 runs short, meaning Penarth claimed the winning draw.

Will Skone with 3-20 and Morgan Crimp with 3-30 were the pick of the Penarth bowlers.

The third team were triumphant as they travelled away to Radyr.

The hosts won the toss and asked Penarth to bat first.

The bears managed 148-7 from their allocated 40 overs.

Neil Stephens top scored with 40 with Gregg Cross contributing 39.

In response, Radyr were bowled out for 135 in the final over of the match.

Ishtiyaq Akhtar took 3-38, Rhys McGowan 2-26, Julien Humphreys 2-14 and Neil Stephens 2-14 as they ran out winners by 13 runs.

The fourths were beaten at home by Hopkinstown on Saturday.

The bears won the toss and decided to field first.

Hopkinstown posted 194-5 from their 40 overs with their opening batsman scoring 103.

Skipper Andrew Prickett was the pick of the bowlers with 3-33.

Penarth finished on 170-6 from their 40 overs despite an impressive unbeaten 94 at the top of the order from David Carter.

Hopkinstown won by 24 runs.

This weekend, the firsts travel to play Newport whilst the seconds host Newport seconds at the Athletic Ground.

The thirds are also at home, to Ton Pentre, while the fourths are away at local rivals Sully Spartans.

On Sunday, the first team travels to the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff, home of Glamorgan, for the South Wales Premier Cricket League Twenty20 Cup Finals Day where they will take on Mumbles once again.
