NORMALLY it is just a club membership and a handicap to enter the club competitions at Wenvoe Castle.

However the Cupid Cup has one additional but important requirement – a marriage licence.

There is no detailed check at the registration desk just a loving smile and perhaps walking hand in hand to the first tee.

The true test of love is out on the course and the competition played as greensome foursome tests all the marriage vows to the limit.

The hot sunshine and the firm ground conditions were a real challenge with players able to hit the ball unusually long distance on the fast running fairways. The well-watered greens were in remarkable condition and a testament to the overworked irrigation system.

Huw and Jayne Smith clearly enjoy the current climate and having recently won another Mixed Competition, the Vaughan Thompson Trophy, posted an excellent score of 44 points to win the Cupid Cup.

Just missing out and eventual runners up were Charlie and Heather Kinsey who were so close with 43 points a score normally worthy of winning the competition.

All the competitors were thanked by vice club captain Lesley Sherrard for their support of the competition and congratulated Huw and Jayne on completing a quick double with their names soon to be seen in gold leaf on the honours board.

July continued to be a busy period with a number of Board competitions being held.

In the Men’s competitions The Captain’s Shield proved to be a very close affair with Rob Gillard just holding off Dean Rowlands both with a net 70 but count back applied to find the winner.

The Palmer Cup saw a convincing win for Alun Wheatley whose net 69 was well clear of the Runner up Jack Walsh with a net 74.

The Ladies Competitions included the Barbara Little Trophy won by Jane Lott with a net 73 two strokes clear of Lyn Williams with a net 75.

Sandra Hathway posted an excellent score of a net 65 to win the Ladies GUW Welsh Dragon two strokes ahead of Lyn Williams just missing out again with a net 67 and usually enough to win.

The Men’s Club Championship qualifiers were played over 36 holes and Keith Stimpson showed his usual consistency to post the best aggregate score of 151 and the top 8 players will go through the knock out stages with the final played in early September on Finals Day.

The Dragon Trophy a similar competition for handicaps of 10 and over but only over 18 holes saw Andrew Canning record the best score of net 69 just ahead of club captain Mike Chick who also recorded a net 69.

Again the knock out stages are underway with the top 8 players looking to reach the final in early September.

August will prove to be as busy as ever with a variety of competitions to be played.

Club membership is available and it is now possible to pick up an attractive offer of £300 for a full playing membership which runs to the end of February 2019. Vacancies exist in all categories and the club would particularly welcome Ladies, Young Players and Juniors with details available from club secretary Nicola Sims on 02920594371.
