This weekend saw the Preliminary Round of the South Wales Alliance League’s W John Owen Cup.

In the past, the cup has always been notorious for cup upsets.

Last season’s final saw Cardiff Cosmo beat Canton Libs who were two divisions higher.

Dinas Powys woes continue with the surprise result of the round losing 5-1 to St Albans, Ehab Hassen scoring their late consolation.

Cogan went down to D1W rivals Cwm Welfare 4-2 with Cole Saunders scoring both of Corries’ goals.

Cardiff Airport overcame their difficult trip to Leckwith House of Sport beating Canton Rangers 5-3.

Josh Hobbs, Ashton Hinton, Alfie Slee and another two from Curtis Scotto were the scorers.

At Aberaman Park there was a cup classic between Championship promotion rivals Aberdare Town and Vale United.

Both teams had the lead at some point before the penalty shoot-out where Aberdare Town held their nerve to come out 4-3 winners. Griff Watts scored Vale United’s two goals.

Back in league action, there was a feisty game at Wenvoe where Ely Rangers overcame Aberfan 5-3.

Alex Long and Richard Greaves opened the scoring for Rangers only for Aberfan to come back to lead 3-2 at halftime before three late goals sealed the win with another from Richard Greaves and two from Tobi Winton.

Sully Sports had a disappointing trip to Garw losing 3-1. Luke Evans their scorer late on.

Finally in Division One, West Holton Road have found some form and now have back-to-back wins propelling them up to mid-table.

Ben Pearce, Tyrell Williams and Dan Morgan were their scorers in the 3-2 win over Maesteg Park.

The South Wales Alliance League trialled a new initiative after the cup games and did the cup draw after all the games were completed, streaming it live on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The draw is as follows:

Cardiff Cosmopolitan FC v Cardiff Airport
