CWM WELFARE 1 SULLY SPORTS 2

THE SOUTH Wales Senior Cup quarter final between these great rivals was switched to Sully as the Beddau pitch was unfit.

The Swanbridge pitch was in first class condition just waiting for some good football, and the spectators can have no complaint after Sports played some of their best stuff after wilting rather since their Welsh FA trophy loss at Wrexham.

Despite some forced changes, Sports took the game to Cwm and pushed them to defend for the opening exchanges with Spencer Lamb shooting straight at the keeper when well placed.

Cwm hit back with a shot that glanced off the post. Sports defence in general coped well with the attacks and Govier and Ferguson were in great form as they battled with the visitors' midfield.

Yarr and Lamb were busy up front but it was defender Ed Jones who broke the deadlock when he met a good centre to head past the keeper. Again Cwm came back and a great drive cannoned of the bar.

With the end-to-end game entertaining the spectators, half time came with Sports leading by the only goal.

The second period saw Sully making the chances as first a shot was cleared off the line and after a great move a Spencer Lamb header was brilliantly saved by the keeper.

But the second goal came just after when the move of the match saw Lamb pick out Richard Yarr with a great cross and Yarr beat the keeper to complete a textbook goal.

Sports were unlucky not to increase their lead as the game progressed but it all changed as they conceded a soft goal and had to endure a nervy last 5 minutes.

They now face a first local derby with Amateur League side Rhoose at Swanbridge on Saturday, April 3.

The news that St Athan have also reached the semi final means that three of the four teams in the semis are from The Vale. A great achievement for the area.

This Saturday Sports travel to rejuvenated Fairwater who have hit a purple patch after their poor start to the season. Team to meet at the Tyny at 12 noon.

WIN ON PENALTIES

MILLWOOD won this Supporters Cup game against the seconds on penalties after the match remained scoreless at the end of extra time when both teams were reduced to ten men.

This Saturday the Seconds are at Maslin Park where they meet Wenvoe Vets in a league game.
