WARM weather and a sunlit afternoon brought superb rowing conditions to this year’s Festival of Rowing at Penarth Regatta on Saturday, September 18.
Penarth notched up two wins respectively in the Junior quad fours and the Veteran sweep fours in an impressive three lane rowing spectacular, which has become a recent feature at Penarth.
The regatta was supported by Llandaff, Monmouth, Cardiff City RC, Gloucester and Ross. All clubs shared in the trophies competing in coastal boats (tubbies) racing over a 800meter course.
To round the afternoon off the Dave Briley invitation race was showcased rowing around 3 buoys stationed in front of the pier and racing back to the finish line for the Dave Briley case of beer!
Representing Penarth was the Captains four David Youde (1999)str; Robin Palfrey (1979) Mike Lee (2010); Richard Laats (2005) bow; with Martin Griffiths (aged 13) Cox .
This race which started and finished in front of the clubhouse, gave spectators an excellent view as the coxes struggled to round the buoys without losing too much 'ground' to their opponents. Swansea narrowly won the prize.
