Penarth Town's first team were in action last Saturday away against St Athan in the Vale Premiership.

Town were able to field a relatively strong squad so were hoping for a good result.

It couldn't have started much better for them when after only about five minutes Ryan Williams in the centre slipped a ball out wide right to Ashley Newcombe.

He stole a few yards then curled the ball towards the far left of the goal so precisely that it was just out of reach of the St Athan keeper, 1-0 to Penarth.

This seemed to give the visitors immediate confidence and they started to move the ball well all round the park, and not long after a break down the left side this time saw Ashley Scott lay a ball through to Anthony Angove who finished neatly.

Town's keeper Idris Angove and the back four of Chris Hegarty, James Williams. Jack Stansfield and Ryan McCann had had hardly anything to do, but just before the break a lapse in concentration allowed the home team to sneak a goal and get themselves back in the game.

Second half and Penarth raised their game with another well worked passing movement had Angove in again at the back post with what looked like a regulation tap in only for the St Athan keeper to pull off an incredible save to deny him. The disbelief was still running around the team as the home side broke out and scored the equaliser.

Town were reeling but managed to settle themselves again with Jonny Williams winning everything in the centre of midfield and really bossing the game. He laid on a beautiful through ball to Angove who just had the keeper to beat, but again was denied by the St Athan's keeper's heroics. Then it was almost a case of deja-vu as the Penarth players were stunned and St Athan broke out again to score their 3rd and take the lead.

Time for changes in the Town line up as Mike Patterson took a place on the left wing and Scott Willetts was thrown up front in an effort to save the game.

Penarth's midfield, still in control, started to press hard with only about 5 minutes left to play. A hopeful long range shot was saved by the St Athan keeper but he was not able to hold on to the ball allowing Willetts to nip in and slip in the equaliser.

Town now smelt blood and continued to press really hard, the home side throwing in desperate tackles to try and keep then out. With only seconds left one of these drew a free kick just outside the St Athan penalty area.

Angove stepped up and drifted a delightful ball into the top left corner of the goal. The winner for Penarth with virtually the last kick of the game. A great effort from all the players and coaching staff.

Penarth's next game is away again next Saturday in Barry to Island Marine although their Seconds will be in action at home against Barry Rovers.

Penarth Town would just like to take the opportunity to thank the Wishful House Chinese takeaway for being their latest sponsor and their generous donation to the club.
