PENARTH Bowling Club enjoyed two victories in last week’s matches with success in the Les Heap trophy and PG One.

With Tuesday’s Alliance fixture falling victim to the weather, Wednesday saw the arrival of Penarth’s nearest rivals in the shape of their very good friends from Penarth Belle Vue for the opening Les Heap trophy game of 2015.

Despite the ever present threat of rain, the game was played to a conclusion with some good bowling ensuing in the usual convivial atmosphere.

In the event, the game went the way of the Rectory Road men with victory on three of the four rinks.

The outstanding home threesome comprised Dave Plank (skip), Bob Willmott and Paul Church who triumphed 26-4 and Clive Fry, Bob Lewis and Phil Davies weighed in with an impressive 20-8 win.

With the Nick Chandler rink also winning by 13-9, it was left to Belle Vue stalwart Malcolm Thomas to rescue two points for the visitors by virtue of a superb shot on the tenth end, when, 6-9 down and facing a seven shot count, he drew the shot with his very last wood to deny Ron Maggs, and went on from there to win by four shots.

There are a few rare events in this world worthy of special note, such as sightings of Elvis, the appearance of Halley’s Comet and Alan Stockham refusing an extra pasty and, ranking amongst these infrequent occurrences is a win for Penarth in this year’s PG One League.

However, for once, the Rectory Road outfit showed their true prowess and succeeded in defeating Mackintosh BC in Saturday’s home match, with two rinks winning and one tied and 11 points secured in a welcome 93-61 success.

Skip Nick Chandler led the way and, with the help of Bob Horne, Lawrence Brooke and Gareth Rosser, was always in command in securing a comprehensive 30-7 win.

Also well to the fore was the Dave Dalby four, where Dave, in company with Bob Lewis, Phil Davies and Ron Birkby, was trailing 11-12 at 14 ends, but suddenly became galvanised and took 17 shots to the opposition’s single over the concluding ends in an inspired spell to win 27-13.

With Colin Grant fighting to a gritty 19-19 draw helped by Rob Grant, Haydn Trow and Berwyn Lansley and Bob Hill’s rink showing great fighting qualities to come back from a 2-9 deficit to a respectable 17-22 scoreline.

Captain Phil Davies must have been delighted with this performance, especially as this talented side have not always delivered to their full potential this year.

Sadly, the only Ladies game scheduled for this week was cancelled, so there are no results to report on this occasion.

Next weekend sees the arrival of this season’s Finals days when the Finals of the various competitions will be fought out followed by the Annual Presentations Ceremony. With some mouth-watering encounters on offer the prospects auger well for a veritable feast of good bowling.
